Cooper Young Art Invitational / Kick off Party – September 16, 2010.
Location: David Perry Smith Gallery, 703 New York
A neighborhood Art Invitational kicks off the start of the Cooper Young Festival weekend on Thursday, September 16 this year. Each year, one artist from the neighborhood is chosen to design a poster that embraces the history, art and eclectic style of Cooper Young. The 2010 Art Invitational will highlight this year’s poster artist, Carol Robison.
Carol was born in Memphis, Tennessee in the 1960s. Faced directly with the race riots of the Civil Rights Movement, her family once hid her behind a safe in her grandfather’s sundries store to avoid the violence in the streets of downtown Memphis. As a teenager, she attended the Creative for Performing Arts Program at Overton High School and later the fine arts programs of Memphis State University and Memphis College of Art. While at MCA, she was a figurative, expressionist painter nurtured by painters, Veda Reed and J.D. Kelly.
Carol has always been fascinated and influenced by pop culture, particularly television, in that it captures the essence of mass media and its influence on the individual as well as representing group mentalities. Carol keeps her art topical by exploring the ideas and images presented in American society with its consumeristic presentation of average life. Her current work embodies animals within urban environments and reconnects with her core techniques and relationship with Memphis history.
